ACC Police: Rapist caught

***From the Athens-Clarke County Police***

On Sunday, April 16th Officer Dedrick was meeting with a victim of a sexual assault and robbery near Old West Broad and the Atlanta Highway. He quickly put out a description of the suspect and soon, Officer Evans reported that he was in foot pursuit of a person matching the suspect.

The suspect ran into a kudzu patch near a wooded area and soon Officers Davis, Harrison, Cooper and Evans set up a perimeter to contain the suspect. Understanding the need for assistance, Sergeant Anderson, Whitney, Jones and Pate, who were working on the eastside of town, assisted with the perimeter.

As darkness was near, the officers requested the assistance of a Georgia State Patrol helicopter equipped with forward looking infrared radiometry (FLIR,) commonly known as thermal imaging. Upon arrival, the helicopter stayed on scene for 30 minutes making several passes over the area but the FLIR could not see/locate the suspect due to the thick kudzu.

The officers decided to make one last effort to locate the suspect, pushing directly into the dense vegetation. Soon after entering the area, they made contact at the base of a tree covered with kudzu with a person matching the suspect’s description. He was found with the victim’s possessions and taken into custody.

Well done by all involved
