Downtown fireworks tonight? Sort of

It’s only a test: the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department says it will set off fireworks this evening, testing two potential downtown sites for next year’s July 4 fireworks show. Today’s test sites are the Lay Park ball field on Hoyt Street and the north end of Hickory Street at Willow Street, which will be closed for about an hour tonight. Launch times are set for around 7 o’clock tonight.

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department and other Unified Government staff will work with crews from J&M Displays to conduct fireworks launch tests on Wednesday, November 15 at two potential downtown sites for the planned 2018 Star Spangled Classic event.

Test launches will be fired from the Lay Park ball field on Hoyt Street and from the northern end of Hickory Street and Willow Street. Appropriate ACC Fire and Emergency Services Department and Police Department personnel will be involved to manage the event and monitor all safety considerations.

The launches will occur between approximately 7:15-7:45 p.m. These tests will allow staff to assess the visibility of fireworks launched from both sites and to select the best launch site for future firework events in the downtown area. As a part of the test launch, portions of Hickory Street and Willow Street will be closed on Wednesday, November 15 between 7:00-8:30 p.m.
