Flash flood watch after record rainfall in Athens

The National Weather Service says Athens received 2.4 inches of rain Sunday, a record for the date. With the heavy rain of Sunday, and with more in the forecast for today, the Weather Service has issued a flash food watch for Athens and surrounding counties.

Troup...Upson and Webster. * From this evening through Wednesday afternoon * Abundant moisture combined with an upper level storm system will lead to widespread showers and thunderstorms later today but particularly overnight into early Tuesday and again late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Heavy rain will be possible at times over the watch area including higher rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Portions of the watch area received 1 to 3 inches of rainfall on Saturday into early Sunday making soils less permeable to additional rainfall. Additional Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible in the watch area through Noon Wednesday. * Flooding in low lying and flood prone areas will be likely, especially in urban areas. In addition, creeks, streams and rivers may overflow their banks.Instructions:A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.
