GBI to investigate officer-involved shooting in Athens

The GBI will investigate Monday’s officer-involved shooting in Athens: Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Scott Freeman says one of his officers shot at a man who shot and killed a woman at the Columbia Brookside apartments off Hawthorne Avenue; Freeman says the man then shot and wounded himself. The woman who was killed is identified as Quintavia Wade. She was 28 years old. The accused triggerman—27 year-old Nicholas Head—was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he was, at last report, in critical condition.

Officers were initially called to the Summerbrook Circle home about 4 p.m. regarding a domestic disturbance, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Police arrived on the scene and witnessed Nicholas Head, 27, fatally shoot 28-year-old Quintavia Wade, police chief Scott Freeman said at a news conference Monday night.

One of the officers immediately “opened fire on (Head) in an attempt to stop the threat,” Freeman said. The officer was identified as Edward Herron, Channel 2 Action News reported.
