Governor Deal orders probe of Walton Co Sheriff’s arrest in Florida

The sheriff of Walton County is being investigated for alleged misconduct after his arrest in a 2016 Florida bar fight. The sheriffs of Hall and McDuffie Counties and the Georgia Attorney General have been appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to look into the case, in which the Sheriff and one of his deputies--Major Damion Mercer-- scuffled with twin brothers in Carrabelle Florida in May of last year. Charges against the two were dismissed last week, but the Georgia Sheriff's Association has asked for the review. It’s similar to the review that was ordered in the case of DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann, who was arrested earlier this year on an indecent exposure charge in Atlanta. Sheriff Mann is in the midst of a 40-day suspension and is awaiting trial in that case.
