Police release details in Scandia Circle shooting

Athens-Clarke County Police continue to investigate a deadly shooting that happened this past Saturday on Scandia Circle on Athens' east side. Police say 23 year-old Sheldon Ellis was shot and killed after a dispute with 31 year-old Quinton Neal. While a police report identifies Neal as the shooter, he has not, at last report, been charged in the case.

From the Athens-Clarke County Police Department...

On 10/14/2017 just before 1:00 pm, officers were dispatched to Scandia Circle in reference to a person shot. The first responding officers found a black male, who was identified as 23-year-old Sheldon Ellis, with a single gunshot wound to the face. Mr. Ellis was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The investigation found that Mr. Ellis had been involved in past incidents with 31-year-old Quinton Neal. Quinton stated that he had asked Mr. Ellis on several occasions not to bother him. Quinton added that he was returning to his residence, and Mr. Ellis was sitting on the steps of the apartment complex that lead to his apartment.

A verbal argument began between the two of them that escalated into a physical confrontation that started outside of Quinton’s residence. The physical altercation moved into Quinton’s apartment, where once inside Quinton stated he was able to get away from Mr. Ellis and retrieve his gun. After retrieving his gun, he fired a single shot at Mr. Ellis striking him in the face. No arrests have been made at the time of this press release. Mr. Ellis’ body has been sent to the GBI crime lab for autopsy.
