Suspects charged after death of US Marshal from Hall Co

Three people have been arrested in the shooting death of a U.S. marshal, the GBI said Thursday.

Patrick Thomas Carothers, 53, of Flowery Branch, was part of a team executing a warrant for an "extremely dangerous" fugitive out of South Carolina when he was killed Nov. 18, 2016, in Long County, officials said.

Dontrell Montese Carter, who was wanted on charges including attempted murder of police officers, had been tracked to a trailer in Allenhurst, a small town about 45 miles southwest of Savannah.

“At the residence where Carter was hiding,” the GBI said, “law enforcement also made contact and interviewed Ashley Chavon Roberts, Levy Lewis Jenkins, and Jeremy Lance Lewis. The investigation into Carothers’ murder found the three committed acts which hindered Carter’s capture.”

Carothers was shot twice when his team attempted to enter the trailer, and he later died at a hospital in Hinesville. A father of five, Carothers was a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service and deputy commander of its Southeast Regional Task Force.

Carter, 25, was also shot multiple times and later died at a hospital in Savannah, officials said.

Roberts, 24, Jenkins, 34, and Lewis, 32, have each been charged with one count of felony hindering apprehension or punishment of a criminal and one count of felony murder in Carothers’ death, the GBI said.
