There is rain in Athens’ forecast for the next two days: forecasters are hoping it’s enough rain to help ease drought conditions that have intensified in recent weeks in Athens and across much of north Georgia. The rain could come with a downside: there is the threat of high winds and thunderstorms in some parts of the region.

"Showers and thunderstorms are just hours away," Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

The high wind warning is for for Gilmer, Pickens, White and other North Georgia counties. That means those areas could get sustained winds of at least 35 mph and gusts of at least 50 mph.

“I am concerned about the possibility of downed trees and power outages,” meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

The warning does not extend to metro Atlanta.

The most northwestern parts of Georgia will get the first round of heavy showers earlier than metro Atlanta, by about 10 p.m. Monday. Then, the storm will move eastward.

Rain is expected to hit metro areas with heavy downpours around midnight Monday.
