Mario Wright has surrendered to Athens-Clarke County Police: Wright was wanted for a shooting that happened earlier this week on Warren Street, a shooting at the home of the 23 year-old victim. Police say that victim was treated at Athens Regional Medical Center for what were described as non life-threatening injuries. The 32 year-old Wright faces a long list of charges that includes aggravated assault. He was booked into the Clarke County jail.

Athens Mayor Nancy Denson says she expects Athens-Clarke County Commissioners to amend the county’s agriculture ordinance and allow for backyard chickens: Denson says she might veto the ordinance if it doesn’t include some protections for neighborhoods that don’t want them.

A fire at a home in Bogart displaces a University of Georgia football coach and his family: there were no injuries in the fire Gus Felder’s house. Felder is on the strength and conditioning staff in the Georgia Bulldog football program. Firefighters say the blaze began in a laundry room and was mostly contained there.

Three football players at North Oconee High School are arrested on assault charges: Jason Fitzpatrick, Samuel Mitchell, and Grant Ogilvie are all 17 years old. They’re accused of grabbing a 14 year-old and dragging him into a bathroom at the school. An Oconee County Sheriff’s Office report says one of them held the younger boy down while the other two beat him. The report says the victim was treated for a concussion at Athens Regional Medical Center.

The Jefferson-based Jackson EMC Foundation awards more grant money to area social service agencies: the Athens-based Food Bank of Northeast Georgia gets $15,000, as does the Boys and Girls Club of Jackson County. Three other area agencies will share in $62,000 from the Jackson EMC grants.
