A man who allegedly carjacked an 81-year-old woman Sunday in Walton County and threw her in the trunk of her own car was arrested Monday morning.

"We are pleased to announce that John Christopher Calhoun has been taken into custody," the Barrow County Sheriff's Office said just after 10:40 a.m. in a Facebook post. He "was captured in Walton County after a brief chase."

Georgia State Patrol officers, Walton and Barrow deputies and Winder police officers had been involved in the search for Calhoun early Monday, according to Channel 2 Action News. Calhoun, 29, allegedly kidnapped the woman from her home in Walton County and crashed her car behind a movie theater in Barrow County, the television station reported.

Investigators were able to track the woman’s cellphone to find her.

When they spotted her vehicle, Calhoun sped away, and a chase ensued, Channel 2 reported. That's when Calhoun crashed the woman’s car and escaped, authorities said.

They searched for him near Exchange Boulevard in Bethlehem but could not find him.

He was arrested after the second chase, this time with deputies in Walton County.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment, Channel 2 reported.

“She seemed to be in reasonably good health, had some abrasions on the back of her head I assume from being in the trunk of the car,” Walton Sheriff Joe Chapman told the television station.

She does not remember the incident, authorities said.

Investigators believe Calhoun did not act alone and that he may be involved in a string of car break-ins in the area.

“We do believe that there’s a strong potential that these individuals are armed and dangerous,” Georgia Bureau of Investigations spokesman Michael Ayers told Channel 2.
