Athens-Clarke County Police arrest a man on a weapons charge: police say 31 year-old Andrew Reaves had a gun in a backpack in a nightclub on Broad Street. He’s accused of illegally possessing the gun with a felony on his resume’.

The proposed creations of special tax districts are on the agenda for this evening’s Jackson County Commission meeting: it’s a 6 o’clock session at the courthouse in Jefferson.

The Commerce City Council meets this evening, 6 o’clock at the Commerce Civic Center. Budget adoption headlines the agenda: the Council is looking at a $25.7 million city spending plan. The Council is also considering the acquisition of a parcel of property off Cherry Street in Commerce, land that could be used for new parking.

Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols, the Republican from Bogart, is kicking off a swing around the state today in Gainesville: the first stop on his annual Alternative Fuel Vehicle Roadshow is set for 9 til noon at the Brenau Downtown Center in Gainesville. Other stops on the tour include Cartersville, Atlanta, Albany, Valdosta, Savannah, and St. Simons. Echols is traveling the state with cars, trucks, buses, and vans that run on electricity, bio-diesel, and other alternative fuels.

Myrtle Figueras says 19 years is enough time to spend on the Gainesville City Council: the veteran Councilwoman says she will not seek a fifth term in elections set for later this year. Figueras served two terms as Mayor of Gainesville and spent more than 30 years as a teacher in the Gainesville City School System.

Hall County Sheriff’s deputies arrest the Gainesville man who led Georgia State Troopers on a high speed chase after allegedly drag racing in Hall County: suspect Ronald Kinsey is 39 years old.  The chase ended on Highway 11 in Hall County. Kinsey faces more than two dozen charges, DUI and reckless driving among them.

Today is election eve, with a handful of special legislative elections and some municipal contests around the region: voters in Lula go to the polls tomorrow to fill a vacant seat on the Lula City Council. Marvin Moore and Walter Harris are the candidates.

A heads-up for DOT roadwork in Hall County: a detour will close the Georgia Highway 284/Clarks Bridge Road Bridge over Lake Lanier for up to ten days beginning today. Crews will finish building the new roadway, tying it into the new bridge and shifting traffic onto the new bridge. Signs announcing the detour are in place along the roadway.

It starts today, and should help with the commute in Atlanta: shoulder lanes, open for traffic on stretches of Georgia 400.

The Tift County Sheriff's Office says a huge haul of narcotics is off the street following the arrest of two people. Leslie Howard and Tonya Harp were arrested after a raid. Drug agents say they recovered four pounds of meth, five ounces of heroin, three pounds of pot, and $55,000 in cash. The GBI and DEA were among the investigating agencies.
