It is another sign of progress on work on the east side of the Highway 10 Loop in Athens: the DOT says entrance ramp from Peter Street and Olympic Drive onto the Inner Loop is now open for business. DOT crews are continuing work on a $14.5 million to convert the Peter Street-Olympic Drive intersection into an interchange. It's a project that is scheduled for completion by the end of March.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office says there was nothing to worry about. There were numerous reports of explosive sounds last night in and around Statham. The Sheriff’s Office in Winder says one loud bang came when a transformer exploded; the other sound was from a man using exploding targets for firearm practice.

A Hart County native will be the next Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation: Russell McMurry will replace the retiring Keith Golden. The appointment was made in a special called meeting of the state Transportation Board, which gathered Tuesday in Atlanta. Golden announced his retirement late last week.

A former Gainesville Police commander has died: Harold Black was a 32-year veteran of the Gainesville Police Department. He died this week at the age of 86.

The Georgia State Patrol has released the name of a woman killed in a car crash in Hall County: Phyllis Segnitz was 75 years old, from Gainesville. Troopers say she was not wearing a seat belt when her vehicle overturned several times on Sardis Road in Hall County.

Hall County drug agents make a drug bust: there are marijuana and methamphetamine charges for 62 year-old Franklin Edwards, finding the drugs and more than $16,000 in cash.

The Gainesville City Council signs off on plans to hire new three new firefighters for the Gainesville Fire Department.

Students who normally attend Fairington Elementary School in Lithonia returned to class Tuesday after Monday’s MLK holiday, but they attended those classes at Miller Grove High School in DeKalb County: DeKalb County fire investigators are still looking into last Saturday’s fire, the blaze that caused extensive damage to the elementary school. They say it appears to be a case of arson.

The Georgia Supreme Court heard Tuesday arguments from attorneys in the Hemy Neuman case: the convicted triggerman in the murder of an Atlanta businessman wants a new trial. Neuman is doing life without parole, his punishment for the 2010 shooting of Rusty Sneiderman, who was gunned down outside a daycare center in Dunwoody. His defense attorneys are seeking a retrial.

Atlanta-based Delta Airlines reports fourth quarter red ink, with a loss of more than $700 million over the last three months of 2014.

Georgia State University students will have the option of selecting roommates of a different gender in the fall. The Atlanta school plans to begin offering that housing option in all of its residence halls. Coed dorms are already in use at Emory and Kennesaw State.

The show is Sleepy Hollow; it airs on Fox and films in North Carolina: there's a move to lure the TV production to Atlanta. Pending is a Fox decision on whether the show gets another season.

The Georgia Supreme Court rules against the latest appeal from death row inmate Warren Lee Hill, set for execution next Tuesday at the state prison in Jackson. Hill killed a fellow inmate in 1990. He still has an appeal pending before a federal court in Atlanta.
