Bulldog athletes get COVID vaccinations

115 athletes at the University of Georgia received their coronavirus vaccinations Tuesday at UGA’s Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall: the shots were administered by a vaccine team from Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

Sport-specific staff and student-athletes from several teams received the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday at the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall.

The vaccination administration team from Piedmont Healthcare, the official healthcare provider for the UGA Athletic Association, administered the shots.

“We vaccinated over 115 student-athletes and staff today,” said Ron Courson, the UGA Athletic Association’s Executive Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine. “We are very appreciative of the Piedmont vaccination administration team, which came on site to provide the COVID-19 vaccine.  We are blessed to have truly outstanding healthcare in our community and are working in coordination with the Georgia Department of Public Health, University Health Center and Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

“Vaccination is an important step in mitigating COVID-19,” Courson continued. “We are recommending that everyone at Georgia participating in intercollegiate athletics, including coaches, staff and student-athletes, receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccination is the best choice to stay protected and keep our student-athletes, their families, friends, teammates and our campus and community safe. We are not mandating the vaccine but will provide it to anyone in our athletic program who wishes to have it. We recognize that this is a personal decision and have been working hard to provide vaccine education to everyone to help them make informed decisions about the vaccine.”
