Gonzalez wins DA’s runoff

Former Athens state Representative Deborah Gonzalez appears to have won Tuesday’s runoff: Democrat Gonzalez pulled in 51 percent of the vote in defeating non-partisan prosecutor James Chafin. Gonzalez will be the next District Attorney in Clarke and Oconee counties. The unofficial vote count was 13,483 for Gonzalez to 12,617 for Chafin.

“I want to say thank you, thank you to all of you. We did this together. This is the people’s vote, and we are ready to roll up our sleeves, work really hard to bring justice to Athens and Oconee,” says Gonzalez, who posted a video on her Facebook page in the hours after her election win.

Elections officials in Franklin and Hart counties say the recounts of votes cast in last month’s presidential elections show no changes from the original tally. Counties around the state are finishing the recounts requested by the Trump campaign.

There is a call for a resignation in Griffin: the Secretary of State’s office wants the elections supervisor in Spalding County to step down amid what are being described as “serious management issues and poor decision making” during last month’s elections.

Midnight tonight is the deadline for the recount of presidential votes that were cast more than four weeks ago in Georgia: all 159 Georgia counties have been working to retally the ballots that were cast on November 3, an election that appears to show Joe Biden a winner, defeating President Trump by 12 thousand of the almost five million ballots that were cast in Georgia.

Vice President Mike Pence is coming back to Georgia, another trip to campaign for Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler: Pence will be in Savannah on Friday, the day before an anticipated Senate runoff rally with President Trump. Perdue and Loeffler are trying to hold off Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in Senate runoffs that are now 34 days away.
