Local briefs include UGA new faculty tour, Oconee Co School Board meeting

With the start of a new fall semester now about a week and a half away, the University of Georgia holds its annual new faculty tour: UGA’s newest faculty members begin today a swing around the state that will continue through Friday.

Former Georgia Bulldog football All-American Richard Seymour was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame over the weekend in Canton Ohio. Seymour played on the defensive line for the Dogs from 1997 through 2000.

With Oconee County students and teachers starting the first full week of the new school year, there is an evening meeting of the Oconee County School Board: it gets underway at 6 at School District offices on School Street in Watkinsville.

Elbert County Commissioners will meet this afternoon, a public hearing and a regularly scheduled Commission session just after 5 o’clock at the Government Complex in Elberton. Commissioners are expected to get a final look at the latest draft of a County budget.

Today is another open house day for the city schools in Gainesville: Gainesville’s new school year begins tomorrow. Hall County students returned to class back on Friday. The Hall County School Board meets this evening in Gainesville.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly crash in Habersham County: a 22 year-old man from Gainesville was killed in the wreck that happened on Georgia Highway 17 near Clarkesville. Christopher Coffman died in the accident that sent two other people to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

A stretch of Braselton Highway in Buford closes this morning: Gwinnett County Police are reconstructing an accident scene on Braselton Highway between Hamilton Creek Parkway and Hamilton Mill Road. Work starts just before 10 o’clock this morning, with the highway closed in both directions.
