Local government roundup: jury trials set to resume, A-CC Commissioners tackle budget

Western Circuit Superior Court Judge Lisa Lott says jury trials are scheduled to resume March 22 in Oconee County and a week later in Clarke County: they will be the first cases since the coronavirus pandemic hit northeast Georgia in March of last year. Judge Lott says cases in Athens will take place in the Classic Center, while Oconee County trials will be held at the courthouse in Watkinsville.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners will be conducting this year’s budget hearings virtually: Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz convenes this afternoon’s WebEx session at 5:30.

This evening’s Oconee County Commission meeting is set for 6 o’clock at the Oconee County courthouse in Watkinsville.

Oconee County Commission Chairman John Daniell tells last night’s meeting of the Oconee County Republican Party that the four-laning of Experiment Station Road between Butler’s Crossing and the Highway 441 bridge will begin in May. It’s a project that is expected to take a year and a half to complete.

Early voting that began Monday in Franklin, Elbert, and Oconee counties continues today: all three counties have March 16 sales tax referendums.

Barrow County Commissioners meet tonight, 7 o’clock at the Historic Courthouse in Winder.

There is expansion talk in Statham: the Statham City Council is talking about adding an annex to the city hall building in Statham.
