316 crash claims life, sparks calls for safety upgrades

There are renewed calls for safety upgrades for Georgia Highway 316 in the wake of last week's deadly crash in Barrow County: a child was killed in the wreck that happened at 316's intersection with Highway 81 near Winder. There was another accident at that same crossing this past weekend.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution...

A 5-year-old boy was killed late Thursday in a two-car crash on Ga. 316 in Barrow County, the sheriff’s office said Friday.

About 7:40 p.m., a westbound Volvo S80 struck a Honda Civic when the Honda, which was eastbound on 316, tried to turn left onto Ga. 81 in front of the Volvo, Capt. Ryan Sears said.

The boy, who was a passenger in the Honda, died on the scene. His name was James Manders, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The force of the collision split the Honda into two pieces, Sears said. The road was closed for about three hours because of the crash.

The Honda driver was from Bethlehem, and the Volvo driver was from Lawrenceville, Sears said.

Other details were not released. The investigation is ongoing.
