A-CC makes plans for fireworks

Athens-Clarke County government makes plans for the long holiday weekend, amending some local government operations and services and gearing up for a Friday fireworks display.

Animal Services

o The Animal Shelter / Adoption Center will be open by appointment only until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3 and will be closed on Saturday, July 4.

o Animal Services officers will not be available for non-emergency calls Saturday, July 4. Non-emergency service calls will resume on Sunday, July 5.

o Emergency services – such as an animal bite, a seriously sick or injured animal, or an animal trapped inside a living space of a home – will be provided throughout the holiday by calling 911.

o The Foster Over the 4th program encourages residents to help foster shelter pets over the weekend due to the Star Spangled Classic fireworks event at the nearby Athens-Ben Epps Airport on Friday, July 3. For more information, visit www.accgov.com/fosterapet.

Leisure Services

o The Star Spangled Classic fireworks show will take place on Friday, July 3 starting at 9:30 p.m. from the Athens-Ben Epps Airport. The event is a drive-in experience. viewable from some public and private parking lots in the area. For more information, visit www.accgov.com/fireworks.

o ACC Leisure Services parks will operate under their normal hours on Saturday, July 4.

o All other department facilities (including Sandy Creek Nature Center, Lyndon House Arts Center, and all community centers) will be closed on Saturday, July 4.

o Bishop ParkLay ParkEast Athens Community Center, and Memorial Park pools and the Rocksprings Pool and Splash Pad will be open on Independence Day from noon - 5:30 p.m. Virginia Walker Park Splash Pad will be open 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. This summer, all pool and splash pad admission fees are waived and everyone will be admitted free of charge. Attendance will be limited and physical distancing and other restrictions will be in place. For more information, visit www.accgov.com/aquatics.

o All parks and facilities, except the Morton Theatre, will resume normal operating hours on Sunday, July 5.

Solid Waste

o Solid Waste offices will be closed on Friday, July 3.

o Residential garbage and recycling collection normally scheduled for Friday will be collected on Thursday, July 2. Monday, Tuesday,  Wednesday, and Thursday collection will be as scheduled. 

o Downtown district commercial curbside, roll cart and dumpster garbage and recycling services will be collected as regularly scheduled. 

o All other commercial curbside, roll cart and dumpster garbage and recycling services normally scheduled for Friday will be collected on Thursday, July 2. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday collection will be as scheduled. 

o Leaf & limb collection will be Monday, June 29 through Thursday, July 2 in Area A.

o The recycling center will be closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. It will resume its regular operating schedule of 7:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 6.

o The landfill will be closed Saturday, July 4. It will resume its regular operating schedule of 7:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 6.

o The CHaRM site will be closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. It operates by appointment only from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Transit

o Transit offices are closed and bus service is suspended on Saturday, July 4.

o All Transit services will resume Sunday, July 5.

Other Offices

All general departmental administrative offices and facilities (City Hall, Courthouse, Satula Avenue Building, Dougherty Street Governmental Building) will be closed on Friday, July 3. Staff resume availability through phone and remote workstations as regularly scheduled on Monday, July 6. Some buildings remain closed to the general public until further notice due to COVID-19 concerns.
