ACCPD, Oconee Co SO deal with back to school issues

There is a heads-up from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, coming at the end of the first week of the new school year in Athens: police say speed zone cameras are up and operating on the streets in front of Barnett Shoals, JJ Harris, and Whitehead Road elementary schools in Athens. Speed limit violators get tickets in the mail.

Signs are in place to alert drivers that the school zone is a photo enforcement area, and the cameras will only be operational when the beacons are flashing.

Thursday marked a second straight day of after-school traffic headaches at Butler’s Crossing in Watkinsville: a traffic accident took down power lines and blocked the busy intersection; they also knocked out non-emergency phone service to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

Today is the first day of the new school year for students and teachers in Hall County. Today and Monday are open house days for the Gainesville City Schools: their first day of class is set for next Tuesday.
