Athens-Clarke County Police and their counterparts in Loganville, Lawrenceville, Holly Springs, and Canton are looking for a man who has been burglarizing churches. He is seen on surveillance video wearing a Batman mask.
From Zachary Hansen, AJC…
Authorities said the man breaking into churches in five cities has been wearing a Batman mask during the crimes, according to Athens police. The thief is accused of targeting churches in Athens, Canton, Holly Springs, Lawrenceville and Loganville.
Athens police Lt. John Radford told AJC.com that the church that was burglarized in their jurisdiction was Cornerstone Church Athens. It took place between March 2 and 3.
Lawrenceville and Loganville police said that they had no incidents like this within their city limits, meaning those burglaries likely took place in unincorporated areas. AJC.com has reached out to the other agencies involved in this investigation to try to learn more about the specific burglaries.
To complete his costume, the man has been wearing gloves and a head lamp, police said in a Facebook post. He’s also been using objects such as rocks to smash windows.
Police have not identified the suspect, but they know what car he drives. No, it’s not the Batmobile.
The suspect is known to drive a gray 2013 Hyundai Elantra, according to police.
“As we are sheltering at home and not gathering in large groups (due to the coronavirus pandemic), please keep a lookout at any property you may manage or own that you are currently not utilizing. (Churches, stores, etc.),” the post said. “Notify the Athens-Clarke County Police Department if you have any information and stay vigilant.”
