Another officer-involved shooting in Athens

Athens-Clarke County Police say the GBI is investigating Athens' fourth officer-involved shooting of the year. It happened over the weekend on Baxter Street, where police say a man with a knife threatened an officer who had responded to a reported domestic disturbance. The 28 year-old man with the knife was shot and wounded and was hospitalized, at last report, in serious condition. Three other officer-involved shootings earlier this year in Athens all ended in the deaths of the men who confronted police with weapons.

From the Athens-Clarke County Police Dept…

Shortly after 5:00pm, ACCPD responded to a domestic violence call at 190 Baxter Drive. Upon arrival, our officer encountered a 28-year-old male who was involved in a domestic violence incident. Shortly after the initial encounter, the male subject brandished a knife in a threatening manner towards our officer. Fearing for his life, our officer discharged his service weapon and struck the male in the torso. ACCPD provided first aid to the subject until EMS arrived to transport him to a local hospital. Currently, the subject is in serious condition. His identity and that of our officer is not being released at this time. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay in accordance with department policy. Also in accordance with our standing policy, the ACCPD has contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who have agreed to handle the investigation.
