Area briefs: A-CC Elections Board meets, Jones declares victory over Miller

Two days after election day and 26 days before the June 21 runoffs, there is a special called meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections. It’s underway at 4:30 this afternoon at the Athens-Clarke County Police Department on Lexington Road.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners hold another budget review session: it gets underway at 5:30 this afternoon in  Athens City Hall. Commissioners are expected to set the County’s property tax rate ahead of next month’s scheduled vote on budget adoption.

Clarke County School District students begin their summer break today, not back in class until August 3: Wednesday was the last day of the school year in Athens. Today is graduation day for the Clarke Central High School class of 2022, with ceremonies relocated from outside at Billy Henderson stadium to indoors at UGA’s Stegeman Coliseum. That’s a concession to the rain and thunderstorms that are in the forecast for this morning.

The Elbert Memorial Hospital Authority votes to place the CEO of the Hospital in Elberton on leave, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. The Authority wants to know about Kerry Trapnell and his authorization of a $25 thousand contribution to a political action committee that had ties to former US Senator David Perdue, who just lost his bid to beat Governor Brian Kemp in this week’s Republican primary.

Butts County state Senator Burt Jones is declaring victory over Hall County Senator Butch Miller in the race for the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor. It looks like Jones got enough votes in Tuesday’s election to avoid a June 21 runoff with Miller.
