Area briefs include start of May classes at UGA, Teacher of the Year in Elberton

Today is a back to class day at UGA: students begin their Maymester and extended summer session classes this morning at the University of Georgia.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Historic Preservation Commission: it is a 5:30 session at the Government Building on Dougherty Street in Athens.

The Elbert County School Board names this year’s Teacher of the Year: Lacy Williams teaches at Elbert County Primary School.

There is a new athletic director for Elbert County High School: Shannon Jarvis, football coach at the school in Elberton, will also serve as AD.

There are verdicts of guilty in Gainesville: father and son Othon Marban Sr and Othon Marban Jr plead guilty to gun running charges. The 56 year-old father and his 20 year-old son were arrested by Hall County Sheriff’s deputies last December, caught with more than 50 firearms in a traffic stop on I-985 south of Gainesville.

A water main break leads to a boil water advisory in Lula. Homes and businesses on more than a dozen streets in Lula are affected.
