Area briefs: tax talk in Elberton, groundbreaking in Dahlonega

Forecast highs for Athens are again approaching the 100 degree mark: Athens topped out at 101 Wednesday, one degree shy of a record high for the date.

Elbert County Commissioners and the City Councils in Elberton and Bowman talk about plans for another special purposes local option sales tax referendum. If Elbert County voters say yes in November, the County would get two-thirds of revenue generated by the tax, while Elberton and Bowman would divide the rest.

Wednesday was a groundbreaking day in Dahlonega, marking the ceremonial start of work on a new hospital for Lumpkin County: North Georgia Health Systems is building the facility, with construction that was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The committee that will search for the next president of Piedmont University will be headed by Barbara Strain: Strain, from Habersham County, is on the Board of Trustees for the Demorest-based school that has a campus in Athens. President James Mellichamp told the Board this week he will retire as soon as a replacement is found.
