Area briefs: UGA students get Thanksgiving break, UGA staff gets Fall Appreciation Day

Today is the last day of classes before tomorrow’s start of Thanksgiving break for students, staff, and faculty at the University of Georgia. Classes resume next Monday at UGA.

Today is fall staff appreciation day at UGA: activities are underway at 3:30 this afternoon in the University of Georgia’s Tate Student Center.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Classic Center Authority. It is a 4 o’clock session at the Classic Center in downtown Athens.

The road closure that began Monday continues today and for the rest of Thanksgiving week in Oconee County: Malcom Bridge Road between Lenru Road and the traffic circle in front of the school is closed to allow for storm drain installation.

This evening’s meeting of the Barrow County Commission is set for 6 o’clock. It takes place at the Historic Courthouse in Winder.

A memorial service for the late Franklin County School Superintendent Chris Forrer has been  scheduled December 4 in the athletic center at Emmanuel College. Forrer, who was 49 years old, passed away at his home earlier this month, losing a battle with cancer. He had been Superintendent of Schools in Carnesville since 2019.

Oakwood Police Officer Timothy Holbrook has resigned amid an investigation into allegations that he body slammed a woman during an arrest in September. Photographs show the woman suffered bruises and a black eye after the incident in Oakwood.
