Athens-Clarke, Barrow counties consider SPLOST referendums

A committee appointed by Athens-Clarke County Commissioners held its first meetings this week: the panel is looking to form a list of projects that will be funded if Athens-Clarke County voters approve the extension of a penny-on-the-dollar Special Purposes Local Option Sales Tax. The SPLOST referendum is scheduled for November.

The Barrow County School Board is raising the possibility of a sales tax referendum that could be placed on ballots in and around Winder in March. The measure would allow Barrow County voters to extend or end a one percent sales tax. The Board meets next week in Winder.

The Barrow County School Board met last night in Winder, interviewing the four candidates who want to fill the unexpired term of Board member Rolando Alvarez. Alvarez is leaving the Board of Education to run in a special election to fill a vacancy on the Barrow County Commission. Patrick Bates, Tandi Dubnik, Jordan Raper, and Don Wildsmith are candidates for appointment to the school board in Winder.

Banks County Commissioners, meeting this week in Homer, sign off on a plan to add staff to the Banks County magistrate's office. Chief Magistrate Ivan Mote will be able to hire a part-time judge to help reduce his caseload. 

There is a retirement announcement in Hart County: Hartwell City Manager David Aldrich says he is stepping down. Aldrich has been the City Manager in Hartwell since 2006.
