Athens gets new mayor tonight

Outgoing Athens Mayor Nancy Denson hands the gavel to mayor-elect Kelly Girtz at tonight’s first Athens-Clarke County Commission meeting of the new year: four new Commissioners will also take their oaths office in the session that starts at 6 o’clock at City Hall. Patrick Davenport will take over in District 1, Tim Denson in District 5, Russell Edwards in District 7, and Ovita Thornton in District 9.

An evening meeting of the Oconee County Commission is set for 6 o'clock at the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. 

Tonight's Barrow County Commission meeting is underway at 7 o'clock at the Historic Courthouse in Winder.

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections meets this afternoon: it's a 3 o'clock session at the County Facilities and Landscape Building on Lexington Road. 

There is an afternoon meeting of the Athens Downtown Development Authority: 3 o'clock at the Gameday Building on West Broad Street downtown. 

The Athens-Clarke County Library Board meets this afternoon, 3 o'clock at the Library on Baxter Street in Athens.

Mark Pettitt has been sworn in as a new member of the City School Board in Gainesville, taking his oath of office despite his December DUI arrest in Hall County.
