Body found in Athens, dispatcher arrested in Hartwell, execution scheduled

Kayakers find the body of a 54 year-old Athens man in the Middle Oconee River: the grim discovery was made over the weekend in the river off Timothy Road. The body has been taken to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy. Athens-Clarke County Police say there were no indications of foul play in the man’s death.

Two women—one from Franklin County and the other from Tennessee—are arrested after allegedly scuffling with security guards at Georgia Square Mall. The women—54 and 27 years old—face charges that include theft and methamphetamine possession.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is getting help from the GBI in investigating a weekend shooting: a man, said to be in his 50s, was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Greenville. The shooting happened off Poplar Springs Road in Franklin County.

There are drug charges for a dispatcher in the Hart County Sheriff's Office: 46 year-old Charles Mewborn (pictured above) was caught with what Sheriff's Office investigators say was methamphetamine. The GBI is in on the ongoing investigation in Hartwell.

There is a date set for what would be Georgia's first execution of the year: May 2 for 52 year-old Scott Morrow, the Barrow County man who is on death row at the state prison in Jackson, convicted of shooting and killing his girlfriend and another woman at a home in Gainesville, murders that happened in 1994. Another woman was shot and wounded.
