Carter Center releases photo of Bidens’ visit to Jimmy, Rosalynn Carter

PLAINS, Ga. — The Carter Center in Atlanta shared a special moment between former President Jimmy Carter and President Joe Biden.

Last week, Biden and first lady Jill Biden traveled to Plains and met with the Carters at their home.

Since everyone was vaccinated, they were able to gather without masks.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen traveled to Sumter County ahead of the visit and talked to people in the area about the presidential visit.

“It’s very exciting. I was here when Jimmy Carter was first elected. It was exciting then and having this happen again is just a thrill,” said Trudy Phillips.

The 96-year-old former president and the 93-year-old former first lady were unable to attend Biden’s inauguration because of the coronavirus pandemic. Both couples are now vaccinated, and the Carters have resumed worshipping in-person at their longtime church.

Biden was a young Delaware senator and Carter ally during the Georgian’s term in the White House, from 1977 to 1981. Carter is now the longest-lived American president in history.
