Clayton Street work begins

City Hall says a project expected to take months to complete begins today in downtown Athens: the Clayton Street Improvement kicks off with what the County says is a “pre-dig” phase to make ready for a storm water system installation on Clayton Street.

The preliminary plans for the Clayton Street improvements was approved by the Mayor and Commission at the Tuesday, June 5 Regular Session.

• The pre-dig phase for stormwater improvements begins Monday, June 18 on the South Side of Clayton Street between North Lumpkin Street and College Avenue.
• Crews will work on one side of each block at a time, block by block
• Work days are Monday - Thursday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
• The work zone will be up to ~200' in one lane and parking spaces.
• Lane closures and parking space closures (10-15) will take place during the work days, although they will be opened up after Thursdays.
• The full pre-dig for all three blocks is expected to end by November 2018.

Public input is still being planned for the streetscape portion of the work (the above ground items: benches, lights, planters, public art, etc.), which has not been finalized. Stay tuned for more information on public input opportunities.

Prior to the pre-dig beginning, staff will visit with businesses in the area to provide additional information and answer questions.
