COVID notes: Danielsville reopens City Hall, Gainesville hospital fills with patients

City officials say it is not back to normal yet, but City Hall in Danielsville is open on a limited basis: the facility in downtown Danielsville was closed because of coronavirus.

Elbert Memorial Hospital is now offering coronavirus vaccinations: the hospital in Elberton says the shots are for those who fall into the Phase 1-A eligibility. That includes healthcare workers, first responders, and those 65 and older. Appointments are necessary.

Officials at Northeast Georgia Medical Center say every ICU bed was full on Thursday. They are at 200% ICU capacity and patients are even being placed in the rehab gym. “We are having to treat patients in the hallways and also in the ambulances,” said Dr. Deepak Aggarwal with Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Grady Hospital in Atlanta says it is out of space because of skyrocketing admissions for COVID 19, the most since last summer. The White House says the rate of new coronavirus admissions in Georgia is the fourth highest in the country.

Fighting the coronavirus pandemic and rebuilding the economy with a focus on rural Georgia were among the topics in Governor Brian Kemp’s State of the State speech, delivered Thursday to a joint session of the Georgia House and Senate.
