Dogs demolish Ga State

Fifth-ranked Georgia completed its two-game home-and-home season series sweep of Georgia State with an 11-1 victory Tuesday evening at Foley Field.

For the eighth time this season, Georgia’s runs reached double-digits. The Bulldogs improved to 19-2 on the season, which is the best start by Georgia since 2009. Additionally, the victory is the 10th in a row, marking the best streak in the Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin era.

Georgia starter Tim Elliot tossed five scoreless frames, striking out six Panthers, while only giving up three hits none of which were extra bases. The junior right-hander improved to 3-1 on the season, winning his second consecutive start – both against Georgia State.

In the second inning, freshman designated hitter Connor Tate hit his first-career homerun over the left-field fence giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Also scoring on the homer was sophomore catcher Mason Meadows who singled up the middle in the previous at-bat.

In the following inning, Georgia tacked on three runs to extend its lead to 5-0. First, sophomore Riley King (2-for-4, 3RBI, 2R) delivered with an RBI single, scoring junior shortstop Cam Shepherd who walked, and stole second base. King then scored on an error, and junior third baseman Aaron Schunk, who singled in the inning, scored on a passed ball.

To break the game open, the Bulldogs piled on four runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, King came through again, singling to left field to clear the bases. King then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Schunk.

Lastly, sophomore third baseman Cole Tate and freshman catcher Shane Marshall both drew bases-loaded walks in the seventh inning to make Georgia’s lead 11-0.

After Elliot departed from the game, sophomore Darryn Pasqua, junior Logan Moody, senior Adam Goodman, and freshman Jack Gowen came out of the bullpen to finish the game. The four Bulldogs in relief yielded one run on one hit, while striking out five batters.

Up next, the Bulldogs will face No. 10 LSU in a three game home stand starting Friday in Athens.

Coach's Corner

Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin

On the bullpen...

“It’s a long season. We are going to need everyone. I was really impressed with how Darryn Pasqua and Logan Moody pitched. We are going to need those guys once we get in to the SEC and some of the other series were going to play. It was really great to see them go out and pitch the way they did today.”

On Tim Elliott’s performance...

“It takes pressure off the bullpen for Tim Elliott to go out there and throw zeros. It takes pressure off of guys like Zac Kristofak, Aaron Schunk and Ryan Webb, some of the guys that throw so much for us. We feel really good about him going out there and throwing strikes. Elliott has just been incredibly consistent for us on the mound.”

On the LSU series...

“I know that we are going to be sold out. There will people all over the place trying to get in to Foley Field, which is really exciting. I can’t remember the last time there was a top-ten matchup in Athens. We have been working incredibly hard to get this program to a place where we can bring top-ten matchups here. I know the fans are excited and our players are excited but to be honest with you it’s another SEC weekend. Every single SEC weekend is huge. LSU is a huge matchup. They were seeded number one at the beginning of the season. They are a great program. We expect it to be a great matchup, and hope to see a lot of red and black in the stands."

Players Perspective

Sophomore Right Fielder Riley King

On the vibe of the team after ten straight wins...

"There is a lot of confidence going around. Going into this past weekend in South Carolina it really showed us that we are a good team. Tonight we came out. We put some runs across. We swung the bats well. It is a really good feeling. We go out there knowing that we can get the job done. Having momentum going into this weekend is huge.”

On the team’s success during mid-week games...

"These mid-week games mean just as much as any other game. At the end of the year the RPI doesn’t matter if you are playing SEC games versus mid-week games. Having the home field advantage in the regional or super regional is dictated by the RPI, so we need to win these mid-week games.”

Sophomore Pitcher Tim Elliott

On pitching in the cold…

"It does not affect me. I come out and do the same thing everyday. That is something Coach [Sean Kenny] really focuses on. We try to do the same thing every time we come out, and that is really what helps us stay consistent.”

On the jump between freshman and sophomore years…

"Confidence is a major difference. Really knowing my pitches is another major difference. As you get older and start throwing harder, your arm changes and you have to learn your pitches all over again. I know my pitches. I know what works. I know what feels good, and I have a lot more confidence in that which really helps.”
