Gainesville Police: military veteran shoots knife-wielding man who was threatening EMTs

Gainesville Police are investigating a Monday shooting, gunfire that sent a man to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was, at last report, listed in critical condition. Police say the victim was threatening medics with knives. He was shot by an armed bystander who reportedly suffered minor injuries in the incident. Gainesville Police say the man with the gun has not been charged in the case.

From WSB TV…

Police say a bystander shot a man who was armed with knives and threatened people in a Gainesville neighborhood.

Police said they got a call about a man behaving strangely on Shades Valley Lanes around 7:30 a.m. The caller said the man was possibly having a mental health crisis and was running around the neighborhood with knives.

Before police got there, the man threatened two female EMTs loading a patient, officers said. At that point, a neighbor shot the subject multiple times.

Channel 2′s Elizabeth Rawlins talked to a woman who did not want to be identified, but said the shooter is her stepson and he is a former member of the military.

“It’s not what he planned to do this morning, but when someone comes at you, and it’s between you and them, his military training kicked in,” she said.

The mother said the incident unfolded at the end of her driveway.

“(My stepson) came running back inside to get the weapon because the gentleman started coming into our driveway,” she said.

The suspect, who was identified as Darrion Suave Fraley, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two other people had minor injuries.

Fraley has been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, 2 counts of obstruction of an EMT, possession of a gun during the commission of a crime, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and aggravated assault.

Police have not identified the veteran who shot Fraley.

The investigation is ongoing.
