Gainesville Police update deadly officer-involved shooting

Gainesville police shot and killed a gunman who was holding people hostage inside a dermatology office Monday morning, officials said.

In a post on Facebook, the Gainesville Police Department said officers encountered the gunman at Lanier Dermatology on South Enota Drive. They had gotten a 911 call just after 11 a.m. reporting a gunman at the business.

The man had a gun and was holding workers and others inside the office, Gainesville police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

When officers approached the man, he brandished the gun and they shot him. He was taken to the hospital, where he died, Holbrook said.

The police department said the officers and other people involved were OK.

The GBI was called to investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is protocol.

Hours after the incident, the GBI was using a bomb detection unit to make sure the alleged gunman’s truck was not rigged with explosives, Channel 2 Action News reported.
