GBI conducts gambling sweep in Athens, surrounding counties

It was a busy Tuesday for the GBI, with agents hitting four convenience stores in Athens-Clarke, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties, arresting store operators on illegal video gambling charges. More than fifty officers from various local law enforcement agencies took part in the raids, which netted multiple arrests. The stores that were targeted in the operation were on Highway 29 north in Athens and in Hull, on Lexington-Carlton Road in Oglethorpe County, and Highway 72 in Comer.

Search warrants also were served at homes in Hull and Watkinsville.

More than 50 officers participated in the raids, which also included Comer Police Department, Georgia Department of Community Services, Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 Unit, and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
