GSP updates deadly crashes in Jackson, Cherokee counties

We have this morning the name of the second person killed in this week’s wrong-way driver crash on I-85 in Jackson County: Eugene Lafontant was 40 years old, from Lawrenceville. The Georgia State Patrol says he was driving a car that was struck by another vehicle driven by 32 year-old Carlos Cobb of Gainesville. State Troopers say it was Cobb’s car that was driving the wrong way on 85 near Dry Pond Road in Jackson County.

Charges will be filed in the aftermath of the Tuesday crash that killed a 17 year-old high school student. Four teenagers were in the car when it left the road and hit a tree in Cherokee County. Two other 17 year-olds and a 15 year-old were injured. Stephen Smith, a senior at Creekview High School in Cherokee County, was killed.
