Habersham County Schools will remain closed through the week

HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Habersham County Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday due to poor road conditions caused by last weekend’s flooding.

Staff is still being asked to report to work.

The remnants of Hurricane Delta dumped over eight inches of rain on the county last Saturday, washing out dozens of roads and bridges, damaging homes and buildings and leaving people stranded in their homes.

Habersham County Emergency Management Director Lynn Smith told local media that at least 20 people were rescued by boat from flooded homes during the storm.

A voluntary evacuation order was issued on Sunday for residents along the Chattahoochee River due to concerns about a possible dam failure in White County. Those residents were all allowed to go back home Oct. 12.
