Auction to own parts of The Varsity ends

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Long-time customers of The Varsity in Athens were like kids in a candy store Wednesday.

Dozens of souvenirs from the Athens location that closed last month are being auctioned off and they were on public display.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen was there as crowds packed into the auction house in Gwinnett County, many wanting to take home a piece of history.

Randy Peterman said there are some things you never forget.

“The only place you could get a greasy chili dog. Back in the day. It was tradition,” Peterman said.

Shannon Millan knows the feeling.

“The #1. The chili dogs with a frosted orange.” “F-O!” “Yes!” Millan said.

“I would love the actual Varsity sign,” Millan said. “How big is your house?” Petersen asked. “Well, we have a big basement!”

For folks like Millan and Peterman, who ate at the Athens Varsity since they were kids, this stuff represents happy memories.

“I have some Varsity stuff now. So, some of this I’m definitely going to be getting. I hope so, anyway,” Peterman said.
