Lady Dogs rout Gators

The Georgia Bulldogs women’s basketball team defeated Florida, 93-58, on Sunday afternoon in Stegeman Coliseum in its Play4Kay Pink Game.

With this win, the Bulldogs improve to 5-5 in the SEC and 14-9 overall. The 93 points scored by Georgia is a season-high, while multiple players also recorded season and career-highs. Georgia shot a season-best 58 percent from the field and posted its largest margin of victory in conference play this year.

The Bulldogs had four players in double figures as well as two players record double-doubles. Georgia’s leading scorer and rebounder, senior Caliya Robinson, recorded her seventh double-double of the season, tallying 17 points and 12 rebounds. Redshirt-junior Taja Cole grabbed Georgia’s second double-double, with 14 points and a new career-high 12 assists.

Sophomore Maya Caldwell also contributed 11 points, tying her season-high and sophomore Que Morrison tallied a season-high 11 points and snagged a career-best four steals.

“We came back after auburn and had a hard look in the mirror and talked about a lot of things” said Georgia head coach Joni Taylor. "We have to eliminate making the same mistakes over and over and over and that’s what we’ve continued to do. Even in some of our wins, we’ve had bad turnovers or let people offensive rebound. You’ve got to be committed to changing those things and not doing the same thing.”

Georgia started quick with a three-pointer from Robinson and grabbed a double-digit lead within five minutes of play. Robinson entered double-digit points with three minutes remaining in the first period. Her first quarter scoring performance helped Georgia grab a 23-10 lead at the end of the first.

Sparked by a 13-1 run and a six minute scoring drought for the Gators towards the end of the second period, Georgia gained its first 20-point lead off a three-pointer from freshman Donnetta Johnson. Heading into the locker room, the Bulldogs led 44-27.

Coming back from halftime, Georgia continued to excel offensively, putting up two more quarters of 20-plus points. Additionally, the Bulldogs won the rebounding battle, 42-25 with 13 offensive boards that resulted in 16 second chance points. Aiding to the season-best shooting performance, Georgia put up 46 points in the paint.

Georgia returns to action on the road against South Carolina on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. in Columbia. The game will be televised on SECN.
