Local government notes: morning meeting for Mall committee in Athens, SPLOST in Franklin Co

The committee that is looking at plans to redevelop the Atlanta Highway property that is home to the Georgia Square Mall meets this morning, a 9 o’clock session at City Hall: Athens-Clarke County Commissioners are expected to decide the fate of the property sometime this fall. Developers are looking at a mixed-use plan that would include retail and residential space for the Mall space that is increasingly empty.

Officials in Walton and Oconee counties are making plans for more than $40 million, state funding for a water treatment plant for the Hard Labor Creek reservoir.

There is nothing official, with only informal discussions so far, but school officials in Commerce are looking at plans for a new high school for Commerce, one that could be built on property that was once home to the Deer Trail Country Club in Jackson County. 

Franklin County Commissioners, meeting in Carnesville, have voted to a put a special purposes local option sales tax referendum on the November ballot. If approved by voters in Franklin County, it’s a tax designed to generate more than $15 million over the next five years.
