Local government roundup includes cancelled election in Elbert Co

The Elections Supervisor in Elbert County has officially cancelled a special election that was to have been held one week from today: former Mayor Pete Gibbons was the only candidate to qualify in a special election to replace Mark Berryman, who stepped down as Mayor of Bowman late last year. Pete Gibbons will return to the office he held before he waged an unsuccessful 2016 campaign for the state Senate.

Oconee County’s Board of Tax Assessors meets this morning: it’s a 9 o’clock session at the courthouse in Watkinsville.

There is an evening meeting of the Oglethorpe County Zoning Board: the session is set for 6 o'clock at the courthouse in Lexington. 

An event set for 6 o'clock this evening is organized by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, with deputies on hand to talk about programs designed to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. It takes place at Jefferson High School. 

The first of four information sessions on plans for the new high school in Barrow County is set for 6 o'clock this evening at Sims Academy in Winder. Dr. Dale Simpson, the newly named principal of the Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy, will be on hand.

Barrow County Commissioners meet tonight: 7 o’clock at the Historic Courthouse in Winder.
