NE Georgians say they felt the quake that shook NC, Virginia

Strongest in NC since 1916

People in Athens are among the thousands who say the felt the rumblings of a powerful Sunday morning earthquake that rattled a region near the North Carolina-Virginia state line. There were no reports of damage in Georgia, although some property was damaged in North Carolina. The quake, the strongest in about a century in North Carolina, registered 5.1 on the Richter Scale.

More than 4,000 people have reported feeling the quake.

The quake was felt not only in Sparta, but in surrounding locations such as Kings Hill, Charlotte, Carrboro, Mint Hill, Oak Ridge and Laurens County, SC, according to U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan.

There were reports of the quake being felt as far south as Blairsville, Georgia, and even Atlanta.
