Oconee Co monitors sewage spill

Officials in Oconee County and from the state Environmental Protection Division continue monitor the County's first sewage spill of the new year: more than 60,000 gallons of sewage leaked from a line off Malcom Bridge Road into Barber Creek in Oconee County.

From the Oconee Co government website…

Oconee County Water Resources was notified of a sewer odor and discharge coming from the ground near the driveway of 1920 Malcom Bridge Road at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. On-call Water Resources personnel responded and determined that a break in the sewer main due to pipe fatigue resulted in a major sewer spill in which approximately 65,000 gallons of wastewater were released into Barber Creek. The sewer main was repaired and restored to normal use by 5 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

In accordance with state regulations, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the Oconee County Environmental Health department were notified and signs are being placed at the spill area. Testing has begun for upstream and downstream water quality and lab results will be forthcoming and reported to Georgia EPD.
