Oconee Co sets funding for road resurfacing

Oconee County Commissioners have signed off on plans for road resurfacing. They're looking at just over $2 million for just over 8 miles of new blacktop, with the Georgia DOT kicking in almost $700,000. The rest will come from Oconee County sales tax receipts.

The Oconee County Board of Commissioners approved the FY2020 Road Resurfacing Program at its October 1 regular meeting.

A total of 8.04 miles of roadway will be resurfaced as part of the program for an estimated total cost of $2,022,061. The Georgia Department of Transportation assists local governments with funding for roadway projects through the Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG). The LMIG funding for Oconee County in FY2020 is $683,393.92. The remaining $1,338,667.08 will come from SPLOST funds.

The Public Works Department rates county roads annually and prioritizes resurfacing based on need.

“The roads resurfaced over the last two years were mostly collector roads,” says Public Works Director Jody Woodall, “but the 2020 program is primarily residential streets. Residential streets are very important to the citizens of our county because that is where they live, and they typically drive those streets multiple times per day.”
