JC Penney closing stores in Athens, Gainesville

JC Penney is closing stores across the country, two of them in northeast Georgia: the struggling retailer says it will close stores on Atlanta Highway in Athens and on Pearl Nix Parkway in Gainesville. Other Georgia JC Penney closures are in Atlanta, Statesboro, Rome, Waycross, and Douglasville. The company is closing 242 of its more than 800 stores nationwide.

“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” Chief Executive Jill Soltau said in a statement.
