Police blotter: hit-and-run investigated, child shot and wounded

Athens-Clarke County Police were, at last report, still searching for the car and driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run wreck on Commerce Road: a 52 year-old, now identified as Kimberly Pierce, was struck and killed late Tuesday night while trying to cross the road north of the Highway 10 Loop. Police say the car that hit Pierce was a 1990s model green Honda, a car that will now likely have front-end damage.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what appears to have been an accidental shooting: a 2 year-old fired the shot that injured 1 year-old. It happened at a home on Maplewood Lane in Hull. Injuries to the child who was shot were not believed to be life-threatening. The 2 year-old was not injured.

Wednesday was a day for damage assessment and clean-up in Rabun County, where a fire damaged a storage building at the historic Dillard House restaurant. Rabun County firefighters say the restaurant itself was not damaged, and there were no injuries. Investigators are searching for the cause of the fire.
