UPDATE: Suspect charged in Athens shooting

A 29 year-old Athens man is now facing charges stemming from this week’s shooting on College Avenue: Athens-Clarke County Police say it was a road rage shooting. They say Oscar Zarco opened fire after an altercation with another driver near Bethel Midtown. There were no injuries. Charges for Zarco include battery and aggressive driving.

UPDATE – September 11, 2019 

After an ACCPD investigation, Oscar Zarco (29, Athens) was arrested for Battery, 2 counts of Cruelty to Children in the 3rd Degree, and Aggressive Driving. According to witnesses and our investigation, the incident stemmed from Zarco’s aggressive driving with another vehicle near College Avenue and Hoyt Street. Both vehicles came to a stop and an altercation between Zarco and the second driver ensued. A firearm was discharged but no one was injured. Zarco was transported to the Clarke County Jail and booked on the four charges.

Response to Shooting Incident in 600 Block of College Avenue 

At 9:15 am this morning, ACCPD responded to a possible shooting in the 600 block of College Avenue. As word of the shooting spread in the community, several schools and businesses in the area made the determination to place their facilities on lockdown. Through investigation, ACCPD has identified and located both parties involved in the incident. Currently, there is no threat to the schools or businesses in the area and ACCPD does not believe that a continuation of any lockdown is warranted.

A truck hauling a load of beer overturned on Macon Highway in Oconee County Tuesday, slowing traffic on Highway 441 south of Athens for several hours.

We have this morning the name of the man killed when his truck was hit by a freight train on a crossing in Elbert County: Clayborn Lewis was 76 years old, from Elberton. The accident (pictured above) happened at a crossing on Athens Highway in Elbert County. Lewis died at a hospital in Greenville South Carolina. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

A Barrow County man faces hit-and-run charges in Gwinnett County: Christopher Dale allegedly hit a woman outside a convenience store and then fled the scene. The 36 year-old Winder is looking at felony counts that include serious injury by vehicle. The woman was hurt when she hit one week ago today at a store on Harbins Road in Dacula.
