Protest set for today in Oglethorpe Co

Organizers call it a “police the police” rally: it’s set for 6 o’clock at the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office, a protest of Sheriff David Gabriel’s decision to hire fired Athens-Clarke County Police Officer Taylor Saulters. Saulters, who was a rookie cop in Athens, was fired two weeks ago after his patrol car hit a fleeing felon on Nellie B Avenue in Athens; he was hired in Oglethorpe County two days after his dismissal in Athens.

From the Facebook page of rally organizer Antwon Stephens...

Former Athens-Clarke County Police Officer Taylor Saulters was fired after deliberately hitting Timmy Patmon during an arrest attempt. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department investigated body cameras and determined that Officer Saulters used DEADLY force that violated code of conduct during the arrest. The Oglethorpe County Sheriff's Office hired Officer Taylor two days after he was fired. That is unjust and unacceptable!

Come out to the Oglethorpe County Sheriff's Department and invite friends as we put heat on the sheriff to denounce police brutality and fire Taylor Saulters.
