Rain, cold weather over, at least for now

Chilly overnight showers cleared out Sunday, setting the tone for a drier and sunnier weather pattern to come.

After the rain, a cold fog was left in the metro area, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon.

Sunday started cold, with temperatures in the 30s, but things warmed up to about 50 degrees, Deon said. That is slightly cooler than average for this time of year.

Clouds lingered during the day, causing low visibility on the roads

As temperatures rise over the course of this week, the chance of rain drops, Deon said. After Sunday, there’s no rain in the forecast until Friday. As for the forecast for the rest of the winter, University of Georgia climatologist Pam Knox is non-committal:

"There's what we call a sub-stratosphere forming that's occurring, and that causes the polar vortex to split up. Depending on where the different parts of that split go we could end up being in much warmer or much colder conditions."
