Sewage spill reported in Oconee Co

State Environmental officials are monitoring this week's sewage spill in Oconee County: the County says more than 6,000 gallons of wastewater flowed from a sewer near the Copperville subdivision off Union Church Road in Oconee County.

From the Oconee County government website…

Oconee County Water Resources was notified of a sewer odor in Copperville subdivision Monday, October 14, 2019, at approximately 11 a.m. Water Resources Department personnel responded and found a sewer flow coming from a sewer force main in a wooded area behind Copperville Subdivision entering a small creek tributary. As a result of a break in the sewer main due to pipe fatigue, approximately 6,090 gallons of waste water was released into a small creek tributary. EPD classifies this level as a minor spill event.

The sewer main was repaired and back to normal use by 3 p.m. on the same day of the occurrence. Signs notifying the public of the spill have been placed in the spill area.

In accordance with state regulations, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) and the Oconee County Environmental Health Department were notified and testing begun for upstream and downstream water quality. Lab results for water quality will be forthcoming. EPD will be notified of these results, and the county is awaiting response and/or closure on the event.
